2007 Elderton Command Shiraz, Barossa Valley, S.Australia

Elderton Command Shiraz, Barossa Valley, S.Australia
Drought had a severe effect in 2007, reducing the production of Elderton's flagship Shiraz to just 20% of its normal yield. Nevertheless, and partly in consequence of this shortfall, the wine shows staggering concentration. Aged for 32 months in new American oak, the bouquet reveals fresh aromas of blackberry, bilberry, woodsmoke and grilled meat, while on the palate there is great density with flavours of mocha, chocolate, leather and licorice. It is less subtle than the 2006 but still retains a peppery, lifted freshness, amazing for such a powerful beast, and does not lack a certain finesse in its structure.
