1987 Viña Tondonia Blanco Gran Reserva, Bodegas R. López de Heredia

Vina Tondonia Blanco Gran Reserva, Bodegas R. Lopez de Heredia
Deep Spanish Gold of colour, the 1987 is an archetype of the Tondonia style, therefore of old white Rioja in general. Perhaps worthy of decanting, with an initial volatility and a nose redolent of leather, gunflint, lanolin and a hint of petrol, this wine will not disappoint Tondonia fans.

It may intrigue those who are new to this wine style, but please, please give it a chance! It flatters not to deceive and the key to it all beyond the weight and the faded grandeur lies in the firm backbone of acidity.

Vina Tondonia Blanco Gran Reserva, Bodegas R. Lopez de Heredia
Rioja, 12% abv, Cork. Tondonia marches to a different beat and this 24-year old white (or rather yellow) wine is oxidised and nutty, with a Sherry-like component and plenty of herbs and bruised apple fruit. The palate is suddenly, shockingly fresh and salty, with a hugely tangy presence, lots of orange and nutty notes and still a latent sweetness that is gorgeously insistent at the core of the wine. Singular stuff that's as dry, different and searingly fresh as you like. Great wine.
