About this WINE

Weingut Kirnbauer

Weingut Kirnbauer

The Kirnbauer Estate is a family-run winery with Walter and Irmgard Kirnbauer at the helm. Located in Austria's eastern-most province, Central Burgenland - a bastion of the Blaufränkisch grape variety.

The three ranges of hills that surround the district to the north, west and south as well as the proximity of Lake Neusiedl, Europe's largest steppe lake, have created a protected micro-clime ideal for full grape ripening. Blaufränkisch is thriving in this environment and on the region's deep loam-clay soils , achieving a remarkable quality, hardly reached elsewhere in Central Europe. Yet, there are also gravely lime soils, which are planted with white varieties resulting in light, fruity whites.

The estate includes plantings of Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah Welschriesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay.

Burgenland

Burgenland

Burgenland  lies on the Hungarian border on the far east of Austria, and accounts or about a third of all Austrian wine output. It is mostly known for its reds and sweet white wines. It is one of the four broader regions in the Austrian wine appellation system- the others being Lower Austria (Nieder- Österreich), Steierland and Bergland Österreich (in western Austria).

The region encompasses 4 sub-regions: Mittelburgenland, Sudburgenland, Neusiedlersee-Hugelland and Neusiedlersee with its world-famous, botrysised sweet wines.

In Neusiedlersee, the climate conditions in the Pannonian plains - hot, dry summers and cold winters - together with the temperature-regulating influence of the Neusiedlersee lake, bring about long ripening periods. High humidity and autumn fog aid in bringing about the noble Botrytis rot, which forms the basis of top quality sweet wines such as Beerenauslese (BA) and Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA).

The leading red grape variety in the broader region is Blaufränkisch, exude a mineral-based spicy flavour. Elegant and aromatic dry whites, mainly from the Pinot family, make their mark as well.

Welschriesling

Welschriesling

Completely unrelated to the formidable Riesling grape of Germany, Welschriesling is a white wine variety widely planted throughout eastern and central Europe. Its most famous incarnation is  found in the rich, late harvest wines (up to trockenbeerenauslese level) produced on the shores of the Neusiedlersee in Burgenland, in Austria. Welschriesling may lack the aromatics of Riesling but its hallmark acidity is a prized quality in sweet wines. The typical style of Welschriesling is dry, made into light, early-drinking wines, esp. in the Weinviertel, Burgenland, and Styria regions of Austria.

Welschrizling is also planted in Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary (known as Olasz Rizling) Slovenia (as Laski Rizling), in the Czech republic and Slovakia (as Rizling Vlassky), in Croatia (under the name of Grasevina). The Italians call it Riesling Italico (as opposed to Riesling Renano, which is the Riesling of Germany).
