2010 Vista Hermosa, Pinot Noir, Casablanca Valley

Vista Hermosa, Pinot Noir, Casablanca Valley
The cool climate of the Casablanca Valley is one of the few places, outside Burgundy where one may expect Pinot Noir to perform well. And perform well it most certainly does here; the Hermosa Pinot Noir is bright of hue, with an attractive Morello Cherry spicy nose and a palate which combines bright acidity and silky red-fruits. An impressive effort, not quite Burgundy, of course, but with many redeeming features, only one of which is the lack of a Burgundian price-tag.
(Simon Field MW, BBR Buyer)

By personal inclination I have more of a preference for European styles of wine and flavours than the New World. But sometimes something New World rings a bell in a way that a European wine never would. I adore Pinot Noir, it would probably be my desert island grape variety, but it rarely comes in drinkable incarnations as affordable as this. You should suspend Burgundian expectations for this wine; indeed worthwhile Red Burgundy could never come at this price.

This wine is pure, bright, succulent, soft and carries the telltale hallmark of really good Pinot by leaving you with a greater intensity of flavour than that with which you started, its flavours gaining in volume through the glass, as if seasoned by truffle. Not that this wine is complex but it delivers directly and satisfyingly. The wine’s quality is further enhanced by the knowledge that, despite carrying 14% alcohol, there is no sense of heaviness.
