This poetically named white is made from 100% Marsanne and sings a very pleasing tune, with a fine aromatic descant and a chorus of approval from those who enjoy the enigmatic characteristics of this under-rated variety.

Of all the large Négociant Houses in the Rhône, Chapoutier is by far the most quality-driven and the most impressive. Michel can be described as pragmatic, enigmatic, dogmatic and probably several less flattering terms, but he is certainly driven, both by a biodynamic philosophy which does not brook short-cuts and by a deep almost atavistic communion with the soil which, amazingly, is applied to his entire production. The fact that his workers’ canteen, which certainly looks like a workers’ canteen, actually serves food which should, by rights, be re and awarded with a Michelin star, is telling indeed…

The 2010 Ermitage Chante Alouette, which is the largest production cuvee of white Ermitage from Chapoutier (there are several thousand cases of this, in contrast to the other cuvees) is one of his strongest efforts to date. Notes of white flowers, honeysuckle, wet rocks and chalk, as well as quince and white peach, are all present in this deep, full-bodied wine, which has great fruit and a more forward accessibility than the other Ermitages. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.
