2009 Plan de l'Homme, Habilis, Côteaux du Languedoc

Plan de l'Homme, Habilis, Coteaux du Languedoc
For those acquainted with the BBR list, the name Plan de L’Homme may sound familiar ; it is in fact the estate formerly known as Plan de L’Om, now taken over by already-established vigneron Rémi Duchemin, who has exploited the full potential from the soils in and around the fashionable enclave of the Terrasses du Larzac. L’Om is an Occitan word for elm tree and is therefore now deemed appropriate for an eponymous humanist pun. To be fair one is more likely to encounter trees of the olive or oak persuasion here, in addition to the distinctive capitelles ( shepherds’ huts) and distinctive soils streaked with red sedimentary rocks, indicative of the presence of iron oxide.

Habilis is a blend of 65% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 20% Carignan, vinified separately then matured in medium-size second-fill barrels. The wine is richly aromatic, with intimations of the garrigue and hints of licorice, then a weighty but poised palate with Grenache generosity tempered by elegance and structure, courtesy of the quality of the vines and of the winemaking alike.
