Mourvèdre
Mourvèdre, aka Monastrell in Spain, is a common blending partner of Syrah and Grenache (aka Garnacha in Spain). In Australia and California it can also appear under the name Mataro.
Mourvèdre's bastion in France is Bandol, where it reigns supreme in the red blends and yielding a savoury, gamey, herby wine. It also commonly features in Southern Rhône, Languedoc & Rousillon blends.
The grape needs a warm climate to ripen fully. Its stronghold in Spain are the appellations along the south-east Mediterranean(Murcia, Jumilla, Bullas), where it produces rosé, dry red and sweet fortified wines. Monastrell has played a significant part in Spain’s vinous heritage; it nurtures wines that are deep in colour and richly tannic, sometimes overbearing in their intensity and concentration

Description
Artadi owns 40 hectares in Alicante. Metrologically and geographically a fair distance from Rioja, Alicante is the homestead of the Monastrell grape which dominates this wine making up 85% of the blend, with the balance shared between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Juan Carlos is proud of what is being achieved in the El Seque winery and is indeed a great fan of Monastrell, aka the French Mourvdre. It is thick skinned grape variety, the wines from which have powerful smoky aromas and can take on a gamey complexity with age.
The little extra rounding from the Merlot adds a plumy mid-palate weight to this richly spicy and expressive wine. The 2010 really is splendid value; a very good choice to go with a mid-week supper, even, dare one suggest, although one does not necessarily endorse such things, to accompany a meal in front of the TV.
