Description

This little-known Argentinian grape traces its origins to the ultra-aromatic Muscat d'Alexandrie (the variety evocative of orange peel and fresh grapes, that is grown all over the Mediterranean) and a clone of Mission, a variety that the Spanish brought with them to the Americas in the 16th century. In Argentina, the two grapes combined to produce something uniquely South American.

Perfumed, light-bodied, crisp and tangy, with overtones of honey and oregano on the palate, Torrontés is perfect as a refreshing start to a meal or paired with delicate flavours such as fish and shellfish. Spicy and aromatic Indian, Chinese and Thai cuisine also go very well with this variety.

About this WINE

J. & F. Lurton

J. & F. Lurton

Jacques & François Lurton started producing wine in Argentina in 1992 and now have extensive holding in the Mendoza region, which is where 90% of quality wine is produced. Mendoza is situated on a plateau in the foothills of the Andes and ranges in altitude from around 450 metres to 1200 metres above sea level. Chardonnay grapes are grown at the higher altitudes, as the temperature is cooler which consequently lengthens the ripening process.

The Lurton brothers now produce wine from all over the world and Santa Celina is one of their most successful ventures, with winemaker Olivier Ruhard producing a range of distinctive high-quality wines.

Torrontés

Torrontés

Torrontés is an umbrella term for a variety of white grapes that usually refer to a range of Argentinian grapes, although there is also a Torrontés grape variety grown in Spain , which seemingly has no relation to its South American counterpart.

The three Argentinian varieties are Torrontés Riojano, Torrontés Sanjuanino, and Torrontés Mendocino, of which the former is by far the most widespread, and generally regarded to be of the best quality. Torrontés has been seen as a grape with great potential, sometimes offering highly acidic and aromatic wines, yet sometimes becoming over-alcoholic.

Torrontés Riojano takes its name from its heritage in La Rioja, Torrontés Sanjuanino comes from the province of San Juan, and Torrontés Mendocino is most often found in the area of Río Negro in the south.
