2007 Barolo, San Lorenzo, Fratelli Alessandria, Piedmont

Barolo, San Lorenzo, Fratelli Alessandria, Piedmont
Vittore’s 18-year-old single vineyard San Lorenzo wine is in many ways a mini-Monvigliero. This was the first vineyard Vittore vinified when he started in 1997 and there has been considerable improvement in the wine ten years on.

The 2007 Barolo San Lorenzo is a disappointment. This is usually one of the finer wines in the Alessandria lineup but bottles of the 2007 I tasted were forward and thin, with little complexity or vintage character. The aromas and flavors are also quite forward, suggesting the wine needs to be enjoyed sooner rather than later. Alessandria has been on a tear of late. This is a rare miss. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015.
