2009 L'Envol de Familongue, Coteaux du Languedoc, Les Terrasses du Larzac

L'Envol de Familongue, Coteaux du Languedoc, Les Terrasses du Larzac
The Familongue winery is located 30 km west of Montpellier. Their vineyards cover 25 hectares and are situated in and around the frighteningly fashionable enclave of Les Terrasses du Larzac, where the ethereal but not flighty l’Envol echoes the corporate leitmotif of the parrot which adorns the labels and literature of the property for reasons which are not immediately obvious.

The blend of the wine is reassuringly complicated; Grenache 43 % , Syrah 19 % Cinsault 7 % Carignan 30 % and Mourvèdre 1 %, hopefully all adding up to 100%. The grapes are vinified separately and aged for 12 months in cement, resulting in a charming and approachable wine, with notes of blackberry and cassis on the nose and a rounded balanced palate. It is supple and fruity with finely grained tannins and a powerful almost savoury finish. The complexity that one may expect from the marriage of these varieties has been delivered with some aplomb.
