Description

Strathisla Speyside distillery is owned and managed by Chivas Brothers, a subsidiary of Pernord Ricard. The distillery itself was completed in 1786 (under the name of Milton or Milltown), making it one of the oldest distilleries from the 18th century still in existence today. The 12 year old Strathisla shows a fruity, spirity nose, with lanolin oilness. The palate is spicy, quite smooth and medium-sweet with a touch of oak. A really enjoyable experience.

Critics reviews

Other
Nose
A hint of (appetising) phenol. Polished oak.
Palate
Robust exchange of sweetness and dryness. Juicy flavours from the oak. Vanilla, violets, sherry.
Finish
Apricot. Prunes in Armagnac. Sappy.
Comment
A malt that dares to be truly oaky. Thank heavens for boldness and individuality in a world where blandness is always an easier option. This beautiful old distillery is Chivas' showpiece, but it is more than a pretty face.

Michael Jackson - Whisky Magazine Issue 29 Nose
Fragrant with citrus (orange peel), flowers (freesia), spice, and a hint of cream-filled choux pastry. Juicy! Water pulls out more weighty malty notes.
Palate
Lovely mid-weight malt that's softer than the nose initially suggests. Great momentum in the mouth with cranachan, soft baked fruits, fruit cake, syrup, apricot and malt. It dances on the tongue.
Finish
Bursts into life.
Comment
Charming, subtle and gorgeous.

About this SPIRIT

Strathisla Distillery, Speyside

Strathisla Distillery, Speyside

Strathisla is the oldest running whisky distillery in the Highlands, and has changed hands and names several times in its two centuries of existence since 1786.

Once known as Milltown or Milton distillery, it obtained its current name when it was acquired by Chivas in 1951. As a result, most of Strathisla’s malt now goes into various Chivas Regal blends, and Strathisla single malts are barely promoted at all.

That said, there are several single malt products and their quality tends to be very well-received.
