2007 Don Melchor, Concha y Toro Maipo Valley

Don Melchor, Concha y Toro Maipo Valley
Sourced from seven plots in the scenic Puente Alto vineyards, just to the South of Santiago, and at 650 metres of altitude, one of the highest locations in the Alto Maipo Valley, the legend that is Don Melchor dates from a first vintage in 1987, its not entirely unambitious initial objective being not only to develop the best red wine that Chile could produce, but also to create the best Cabernet Sauvignon in the world. Concha y Toro christened the wine with the name of the company’s founder, Don Melchor Concha y Toro. Now with the 2007 vintage it seems that they have come a long way down the path of fulfilling these early ambitions.

The wine is of a glorious deep cherry red hue, then the nose and palate recite in turn the entire black fruit catechism, with, as one may expect form Cabernet Sauvignon, blackcurrant at the forefront. Notes of tobacco and earth lend support and interest and the precipitous nature of the provenance ensures fine acidity and freshness on the crescendo of a finish.
