2002 Ch. Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac

Ch. Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac
Ch Grand Puy Lacoste belongs to the Borie family, proud owners of two other Classified Growths in Ducru-Beaucaillou and Haut-Batailley. Grand Puy Lacoste is run by Francois Xavier Borie who favours classicism in the style of the wine rather than seeking to make a flamboyant modern expression of claret.

The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks before being aged in wood (50% new) for 18 months. The terroir is deep gravel over limestone, so it is unsurprising that the wine tastes like a benchmark Pauillac, with cedar and tobacco notes coming into play as it gains in maturity.

2002 was not hailed as a fine vintage at birth, but as always happens with so-called lesser vintages there are always some exceptions, and one of the challenges for us is to find those over-performing estates as the wines can often be very good value.
