Description

The pinnacle of Le Terrazze's range, and rightly so: a beautifully pure 100% Montepulciano d'Abruzzo single varietal, single estate wine from prized limestone-based Monte Conero vineyards & an excellent vintage, where velvety red/black cherry stone fruit recline on a fresh, finely-poised minerally bed; not dissimilar to top St.Emilion in fact, as combines low tannins, suave fleshy fruit with dry-stone minerality. All wrapped up in 100% new french oak. Excellent with a superior Lasagna. Bravo Antonio, Johanna has never looked so exquisite!

About this WINE

Le Terrazze

Le Terrazze

Rosso Conero is one of the major red DOCs in the Marche region. It takes its name from the impressive central limestone massif of Monte Conero, which towers over the city of Ancona. As well as providing natural shelter for the port of Ancona, it also acts as protection for the vines of Rosso Conero. The town of Ancona has expanded over the years, leading to the Conero vineyards shrinking from over 400 hectares in the early 1970s to around 140 hectares today.

Fattoria Le Terrazze is one of the most celebrated producers in the region - its colourful owner Antonio Terni has been known to compare the Montepulciano grape to ";a block of marble waiting to be turned into a statue."; The wine is produced from Montepulciano and a maximum of 15% Sangiovese. These are fascinating wines that show what this underrated grape is capable of, under ideal growing conditions and with skilful vinification.

Rosso Conero

Rosso Conero

The red wine DOC zones of the Marches are Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno and based chiefly on the Sangiovese and Montepulciano d' Abruzzo grapes, sometimes blended, sometimes not. The most important in terms of wine volume is Rosso Piceno, dominated by Sangiovese.

Rosso Conero, dominated by Montepulciano d' Abruzzo, has gained even more praise, thanks to the devotion to quality shown by  leading producers like Fattoria La Terraze. The zone covers the area on the slopes of the Conero massif south of Ancona.

Both Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno were habitually made to drink within two to four years, when they are persuasively round and fresh in flavour, though certain producers have made wines that age remarkably well from good vintages, sometimes for a decade or more.

Montepulciano

Montepulciano

The Montepulciano grape stands as a cornerstone of Italian viticulture, flourishing in Central and Eastern Italy. Despite its name, it maintains no genetic ties to the renowned Tuscan town of Montepulciano nor its celebrated Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which predominantly features Sangiovese. Renowned for its adaptability, Montepulciano thrives in a spectrum of soil types and climates. Exhibiting robust growth characteristics, it yields generously and matures late in the season, offering winemakers flexibility in cultivation and harvest.

The heartland of Montepulciano lies in the Abruzzo district, where its flagship incarnation, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, reigns supreme. Here, it delivers wines of remarkable character and distinction. In the Marche region, it harmonises with Sangiovese to craft illustrious blends such as Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno, showcasing its versatility and capacity for nuanced expression.

Montepulciano wines typically embody a light to medium-bodied profile, brimming with fruit-forward flavours. Often characterised by gentle tannins and moderate acidity, they offer immediate pleasure and accessibility, best enjoyed in their youth. Yet, a select cadre of visionary producers employs low-yielding old vines, crafting 100% Montepulciano wines that undergo meticulous oak ageing. These esteemed bottlings defy convention, evolving gracefully in the bottle over a decade or more, unfurling layers of complexity and refinement.
