2008 Mullineux Syrah, Swartland, South Africa

Mullineux Syrah, Swartland, South Africa
Chris Mullineux, ex of Tullbagh Moutain Vineyards, has coaxed a fine, peppery, schisty, northern-Rhônish nose from his Swartland fruit. The palate has lovely black fruit that is sweet and pure, but there’s a sinewy, savoury structure too with a gamy edge that combines with good acidity to give this a long, food-friendly finish. A cracking first release.
(91/100 points The Wine Gang - Top 20 BBR Wines - July 09)Mullineux Family Wines

This syrah is from South Africa’s Swartland district, an area north of Cape Town which traditionally produced chunky, rather rustic reds. Not this one. It’s a northern Rhône style red, with perfumy, smoky, black pepper aromas, refined black fruit, smoke and herb flavours and a lovely silky texture. This is the debut vintage for Mullineux Family Vineyards, although Chris Mullineux is well-known as the winemaker who put Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards on the map.
(Joanna Simon - The Times - Wines of the Week - 15 May 09)Mullineux Family Wines

The fact that Chris and Andrea Mullineux have focused their efforts on producing just 2 wines ( a wee sweetie!), speaks volumes in terms of the quality they aspire to. No plans for world domination, nor endless new products, their grape suppliers are evidently so well drilled and selective that this wine shows no hint of the elastoplast flavours, caused by diseased fruit, that dodge too many Cape wines these days. This by contrast continues the Old World theme, a virtual homage to the best of Crozes-Hermitage, with its demur cracked black pepper and damson fruit aromatics; there's even that telltale lick of iodine!Mullineux Family Wines

As with its sister White, it's impeccably turned out; beautifully pure and poised, alive with energy, yet with a luscious roll of wild blackberry fruit, thanks in part to the 225-litre and 500-litre barrel elevage, to allow you to enjoy it even now. Did I mention the dash of Mourvedre? Enjoy with lamb or goat - I'm not kidding.

Mullineux Syrah, Swartland, South Africa
Mullineux Syrah, Swartland is a restrained style of Syrah; the nose combines clean black fruit with some herbal and meaty notes. Full-bodied with a balanced natural acidity and black fruit characters, followed with an elegant concentration. A very attractive, classy wine.
