The Syrah vines were partially destemmed in 2008 and then fermented in open top vats, with traditional foot-treading, as in the Douro, to extract fruit, colour and personality. This St Joseph is seen as one of the finest expressions of what is turning into a very fashionable appellation, hitherto somewhat blighted by its unmanageable size and resulting divergences of style. Purity is all, from the aromatics all the way through the mid-palate to the finely etched finish. This has been achieved by the sheer quality of the fruit itself and the minimal intervention in the winery, where maturation takes place in large wooden vats (some of which are fifty years old).Domaine Pierre Gonon
