2010 Altano Organic Red, Douro

Altano Organic Red, Douro
Portugal, in the eyes of the English Wine Trade, especially the traditional wine trade, has long been synonymous with fortified wine. Indeed BBR are proud to be the largest importer of Vintage Port in the UK, and the Symington family, the name behind Dow Graham and Warre inter alia, are by some distance our most significant supplier. But there is more to life than vintage port (hard to believe I know) and Portugal is now developing a great reputation for its table wines.

It would be strange indeed if the Symingtons were not a part of this great adventure! The blend is shared equally between indigenous varieties Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca. The wine is fermented in stainless steel vats with pumping over and a soft maceration at low temperatures (23-24C) in order to extract colour and aromas and to limit tannin extraction.

The result is an aromatic, full yet pleasingly fruity wine. The nose of violet and lavender adds a distinctly Portuguese feel to the ensemble, with the fruit character on the palate concentrated yet ripe, with black cherry and plum leading the fruit descriptors and black pepper providing a subtle yet spicy back-drop.
