Description

A strong contender for the finest wine in Chile, the Don Maximiano 2007 is made up of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. It is farmed from five plots , imaginatively titled Max 1-V, all of which are located in the Aconcagua Valley and as a result benefit from cooling Pacific breezes in addition to predominately granitic or gravely soils which offer good levels of drainage.

This is a classic Cabernet, with cassis, blueberry and truffle on the nose and a palate where the oak (18 months in 94% French) is finely integrated and subtle. The wine is rich and textured, and has both structural definition and perfect equilibrium, qualities that are seldom combined with such success in the New World.

Critics reviews

Wine Advocate94+/100
The 2007 Don Maximiano Founders Reserve is composed of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Syrah that spent 20 months in new French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it surrenders an enticing nose of toasty new oak, graphite, scorched earth, cinnamon, clove, violets, blueberry, and blackberry. On the palate, it reveals a suave personality that combines elegance and power. Impeccably balanced, it has the structure to evolve for 4-6 years and should provide pleasure through 2027.

About this WINE

Errazuriz

Errazuriz

Vina Errazuriz was established by Don Maximiano Errazuriz in 1870 and today the company is run by his descendent, Eduardo Chadwick. The company has four separate estates, with its original estate and spiritual heartland being in the Panquehue sub-region of the Aconcagua Valley. Here the vines benefit from the cool and rainy winters, as well as the warm summers. Most importantly, the majority of the vineyards are situated on slopes, which ensures that the grapes reach optimum ripeness.

Californian winemaker Ed Flaherty joined in 1997 and he has taken the wines to new heights, largely through fine-tuning vineyard practices and by reducing yields.

Without doubt one of the very best Chilean producers.
