2006 Barolo DOCG Cru Cerretta, Az. Agr. Giovanni Rosso

Barolo DOCG Cru Cerretta, Az. Agr. Giovanni Rosso
While La Serra is from uptown Serralunga, where the soils are (nutrient) poor, white & mean, Cerretta comes from the richer, more salubrious suburbs (& soils) further down the Serralunga spine. It’s a vineyard that bathes in its own amphitheatre, just up behind the family’s hamlet of Baudana. So deeper soils, a warmer mesoclimate, & slightly older vines all contrive to give us a fuller, fleshier, darker fruited Barolo, more grasso, more loganberries than raspberries; more punch than pirouette. A great wine for the longer term, if you can wait.

Barolo DOCG Cru Cerretta, Az. Agr. Giovanni Rosso
The estate’s 2006 Barolo Cerretta is one of the finest wines I have tasted at this address. The Cerretta flows with impressive density and richness in its fruit that virtually covers the tannins all the way through to the powerful, imposing finish. Menthol, spices and a host of other balsamic aromas and flavors are woven throughout, adding further dimensions of complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026.

This is a beautiful set of 2006 Baroli from Davide Rosso, a young grower who continues to demonstrate significant promise.
