2009 Le Petit Lion de Marquis de Las Cases, St Julien

Le Petit Lion de Marquis de Las Cases, St Julien
Le Petit Lion is the second wine of Ch. Léoville-Las Cases, created with the aim of providing a more fruit-forward style of wine with a higher Merlot content. The 71% Merlot in the 2009 Petit Lion certainly results in a richer, more plush style of wine than the Grand Vin but the 29% Cabernet Sauvignon clearly adds the brooding, dark note of Las Cases. Very intense with an almost beefy character and a long finish, this is certainly no young cub.Château Léoville Las Cases

Deep red, floral, fragrant nose with lovely balanced and finely expressed Cabernet fruit with Saint-Julien elegance.

First vintage was 2007. Strange label with a baby lion superimposed within the famous Las Cases arch. Paler than Potensac. Tea and Earl Grey and sensitive and very fresh. A promising debut! Luscious and transparent and probably for quite early consumption but with a twist of first-growth quality. Real energy and tingle. He pulled out lots of vines in the Clos and these are the young vines (average age 5-10 years).

Le Petit Lion de Marquis de Las Cases, St Julien
2009 is the debut vintage of the estate-s new second wine. The 2009 Le Petit Lion (a 2,000-case blend of 71% Merlot and 29% Cabernet Sauvignon) is a luscious, fruit-driven effort produced from young vine parcels in the famous Le Clos, the vineyard next to Chateau Latour that is responsible for Leoville Las Cases. Le Petit Lion exhibits abundant fruit, easy-going tannins, and a forward mouthfeel. Enjoy it over the next 5-7 years. (Tasted once.)

Currants on toasted bread character on the nose and palate. Medium- to full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a medium finish. Balanced and attractive. This is the new second wine from Las Cases.
