2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, Ch. de Beaucastel

Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, Ch. de Beaucastel
85% of this cuvée comes from Roussanne, the balance mainly from Grenache Blanc. The constituent elements are fermented in both barrel and tank, the assemblage thus marrying texture and freshness. Encyclopaedic notes are evidenced, from the blossom and quince on the nose to the honey on the palate. With the malolactic fermentation now fully blocked, there is the prospect of both more freshness in youth and more capacity to age, both to be welcomed.
Simon Field MW, BBR Buyer, February 2012

Beaucastel occupies an almost homogenous 100 hectare plot in the north-east zone of the appellation, the zone which is perhaps the most resistant to rapid climate change as it is the most exposed to the Mistral and has a great number of the famous pudding stones, with their capacity to regulate excess temperature over the course of a day and a night. The reputation of the property continues to climb, its stewardship now secure in the hands of the next generation of Perrins. One of whom, the affable yet very industrious Marc, maintains that he has not seen a vintage better than 2010. For him the nearest comparisons are 1978 and 1962, the latter of which he will not have encountered personally, merely though the enviable library stock held at the property.

Still quite embryonic on the nose at first but then it opened out very beguilingly. Heady stuff and then really opens out on the palate. Great spread across the palate. In its charming first flush of youth. (Why wait?) Powerful. But balanced. Blossomy with a streak of something more like gorse blossom than minerals. Clean palate scrub on the end.

Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, Ch. de Beaucastel
The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc (80% Roussanne and 20% Grenache Blanc vinified in tank) exhibits very good acidity along with a lighter, more delicate style than previous vintages (malolactic is now totally blocked), and restrained orange peel, tangerine oil, white peach, honeysuckle and candle wax notes. This medium to full-bodied, zesty, fresh wine is still backward and unevolved, so cellar it for 1-2 years and drink it over the following 10+.
