2008 Langhe Nebbiolo, Olek Bondonio, Barbaresco, Piedmont

Langhe Nebbiolo, Olek Bondonio, Barbaresco, Piedmont
Drawn from the vineyards of Starderi (Neive) and Roncoglie (Tre Stelle), vinified in cement, stainless-steel and new Gamba slavonian botte (10 hl), Olek’s delivered a brilliantly pure, suave, baby Barbaresco, whose gentle, pretty strawberry fruit is most beguiling. As the botte grande is new the oak is present but not overwhelming; instead it gives the wine a charming red fruited, tobacco spiciness & roll. What’s most evident is the purity and transparency of the Nebbiolo fruit. Drinking now with game or lamb.

Olek favours the small size of estate as it allows him to single-handedly work the vines and make the wines. Viticulture is essentially organic while the approach in the tiny cantina is traditional, fermenting in large cement tanks followed by ageing in slavonian Gamba & Stockinger (Austrian) botte grande; all in a scrupulously clean environment (something he did learn about in Bordeaux). The wines are traditionally framed while boasting sweet ripe fruit.
