2009 Hewitson Old Garden Mourvèdre, Barossa Valley, S. Australia

Hewitson Old Garden Mourvedre, Barossa Valley, S. Australia
2009 was a brilliant vintage for Hewitson Old Garden Mourvedre, the product of exceptionally old, deep-rooted vines. All the weather conditions conspired to produce grapes of perfect ripeness and balance, blessed with huge concentration but, at the same time, a certain finesse and a true sense of terroir.

The bouquet displays opulent black cherry with dark chocolate hints, coffee and citrus peel; the 100% new French oak in which is matured for 18 months is totally submerged beneath the wealth of fruit on the palate. The tannins are plentiful but ripe so are not at all intrusive, and the finish is long and harmonious. Mourvedre’s traditional acidity helps maintain a delicious balance, too.
