Torgiano

See Torgiano producers

Torgiano DOCG is a small hillside zone between Perugia and Assisi in the central Italian region of Umbria. It was considered Umbria's top quality red wine in the 1960s and 1970s.

The Lungarotti family continues to dominate the production of this wine, ever since the DOC was established in response to their Riserva Rubesco wine. Lungarotti's wines are the proof that the Sangiovese grape can be equally successful outside of its traditional confines in Tuscany

Canaiolo grapes also make up a significant proportion of the Torgiano blend. Montepulciano, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, albeit in small quantities, may also play a role in the Torgiano blends. Torgiano Riservas spend a prolonged time in bottle -up to ten years- before release.
