Kangaroo Island is Australia’s 3rd largest island and sits 13km from the coast of mainland Australia at its closest point. With foundations laid for agricultural development in the mid 20th century, the island has since developed an enviable reputation for producing food and wine of outstanding quality.
The Kangaroo Island wine region in Australia is heavily influenced by the Southern Ocean’s breezes which play an important role in the ripening process. Although there is lots of sunshine on the island, crucial in ripening the grapes, the cooling sea breezes help protect the grapes from over-ripening on the vine. Even during periods of extreme heat Kangaroo Island’s vines are better protected than most mainland vineyards thanks to these maritime breezes which also lead to much cooler night-time temperatures, giving the vines a much-needed break from the heat in the warmer months.
The particular appeal of this site for wine-making is its relative coolness, allowing for slow ripening of the grapes resulting in wines of finesse and elegance rather than the blockbuster power for which Australian wines is usually better known. The island is a prime spot for growing Shiraz and Cabernet varieties.
