There are four "appelation d'origine controlees" for wines produced in the prefecture of Heraclion, Crete:
- Peza Red- Blends of Kotsifali and Mandilari and matured in oak barrels.. The rules stipulate yields of less that 1000 Kg of wine per 1000 sq.m with a minimum sugar content of 188 grams/liter.
- Peza white. Based on the Vilana white wine variety with a maximum alcohol content of 11-12,5 vol.
- Archanes Red: Blends of Kotsifali and Mandilari
- Dafnes Red: these are dry or sweet wines produced from the red-skin Laitiko variety.
Other permitted varieties in the Heraclion region: Ladikino, Syrah and Carignane, Athiri, Tthrapsathiri, Sylvaner.
