The North Coast's Mendocino County is effectively a cooler extension of Sonoma County to its south. Mendocino County's 6,000 ha includes two of the coolest, highest-lying AVAs, Anderson Valley and Potter Valley.
Here, coastal fog-banks are replaced by a harsher interior continental climate suited to fresh, vibrant Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blancs, Zinfandels and Cabernet Sauvignons; much of the white fruit is destined for the sparkling wine industry.
