Côteaux du Languedoc

See Côteaux du Languedoc producers See a list of Côteaux du Languedoc wines

The Coteaux Du Languedoc appellation is either a useful assemblage of the top enclaves in the Hérault Department or an extremely unhelpful conglomeration of vastly different sub-regions which would be more helpfully categorised independently. Whatever one's opinion, it is not short of both significance and potential, running along the Mediterranean coast from Narbonne almost as far East as Nîmes and covering over 10,000 hectares and some of the most attractive and wonderfully-situated vineyards in France.

Several of its sub-appellations are fighting for full Appellation Contrôlée status, the most famous being La Clape, Picpoul de Pinet and Pic Saint Loup. Of the others, high quality wines are now being produced in, inter alia, Montpeyroux, Grés De Montpellier and Les Terrasses de Larzac. All the principle grapes  are represented, with Carignan and Cinsualt reduced to a maximum of 40% apiece  to encourage more fashionable varieties, especially Syrah and Mourvèdre. The terroir is equally diverse, with  limestone, schist, sand and clay all evidenced.

Made under anaerobic conditions, the wine has fine colouring with hints of green. A spicy and floral nose, distinctive and with echoes of gunflint, aniseed and fennel. En bouche, crisp but balanced acidity, mineral notes and a surprisingly broad texture.. The 2008 is especially successful, it marriage of  oyster shell, pebbles and almost a hint of honey crying out for fruits de mer, grilled fish and, when in season, asparagus.  MORE

Old-vine Carignan is quite a popular term these days, its implication being that because the vines have been there a long time, that they has acquired a mysterious veneer of quality that is sometimes lacking in this, the putative work-horse variety of the region. Caveat emptor! Some old vine Carignan is better than others, and this is one of the best. Familongue have a knack of making wines that are rich, full bodied and yet replete with local colour and personality. Marinated dark fruits, souisbois and a hint of licorice are evidenced here, the palate is full but rounded, the finish clean and satisfying. One for sanglier or boudin noir!(Simon Field MW, BBR Buyer) MORE

Sand, clay, gravel and chalk make up the complex tapestry of terroir at Château Ricardelle; a complexity redoubled by an assemblage which blends Grenache, Carignan and Syrah. The wine captures a warming Mediterranean charm, a dark-berried fruit character and an attractive aromatic charm that manages to be both subtle and beguiling.

Syrah predominates here, with 15% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache. A de facto 'second wine' described by Réné Rostaing as 'gourmand', this is silky, rounded and immediately seductive; hints of garrigue and autumnal earth underpin the attractive hedgerow fruits; all in all a most pleasing landscape. Softer than the 05, with less oak aging, this is a more approachable wine, recognised thus by Réne, yet drinking beautifully now, the Syrah especially soft and seductive.

"Syrah and Grenache from the dramatic eponymous limestone peaks just to the north of Montpellier. With a distinctive nose of garrigue, incense and macerated plum, this is a warm Mediterranean wine, its putative rawness long since tamed by the expertise of Jean Benoit Cavalier. Dark fruit on the palate, then a mineral acidity and a warming but not hot finish. A good match for casseroles and jugged hare."

Joël is building a reputation for wines with a real sense of place, making use of the distinctive palette of indigenous varieties. Closalbières is the premium cuvée from Chateau Ricardelle, again made up of equal proportions of Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre, but this time aged for twelve months in barrel. The result is astonishingly good, with fine tannins, plenty of red and black fruit, and pleasing hints of spice and pepper, all beautifully integrated and with great length.

Full Bodied, Dry, Red, Southern Rhône Blend, Drink now, 13.5% alc.

Eponymous chalky soils and a blend 50/30/20, of -respectively- Syrah (more Syrah than is usual in Pic-St. Loup), Grenache and Mourvèdre (André Leenhardt is a great fan and a craftsman of Mourvèdre) have created a wine rich in aroma and ripe red and black fruit. The nose sings notes from the garrigue, with thyme, lavender and truffle evidenced; on the palate there are rich blackberry notes underpinned by black olives and a mineral substratum. A superbly textured wine, oaked but not over oaked, powerful and distinctive, this will go well with pheasant or partridge.

Deeply-coloured , with an intensly savoury nose with dominant aromas of roasted meat, dried herbs and crushed peppercorns. The palate is elegant, yet sufficiently rich, with a smooth fruity (cassis and blackberries) mouthfeel and flinty tannins. Excellent on its own or for pairing with red-sauce Italian dishes. MORE
