Driving into Bordeaux at an obscenely early hour on Good Friday we thought we had taken one left turn too many and ended up back at 3 St James's Street. But no, it was just Bernard Magrez's wine shop in Pessac. Taking the panelled arched windows, the dark green exterior and 300 year old interior of our London shop it was like a home from home.

Featuring: Ch. Haut-Brion, Ch. La Mission Haut-Brion, Ch. La Tour Haut Brion (Ch. La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion), Le Bahans de Haut Brion, Ch. Haut Brion Blanc, Ch. Laville Haut Brion, Domaine de Chevalier, Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte, Ch. Haut Bailly and Ch. du Tertre.

Back on the Left Bank today, we started with another reliable performer, St Julien's Ch. Lagrange. We were late and, despite apologising, they reminded us twice. An attack of the giggles suggested that it was all getting a bit too much. It was time to stick two pencils up our noses and be dragged home, classified insane.

Featuring: Ch. Latour, Ch. Haut-Bages LibÈral, Ch. FerriËre, Ch. La Gurgue, Ch. Lynch-Bages, Ch. Villa Bel Air and Ch. Les Ormes de Pez.

Not for Ducru-Beaucaillou the staid traditionalism of Bordeaux; a visit here is a truly unforgettable experience. You have to admire owner Bruno Borie for what he is trying to do at Ducru - he has completely envigorated this slightly underperforming Second Growth, hugely improving the wine and bestowing Ducru with a very distinctive personality. Whether Borie's continuing pushing of the boundaries is un peu trop is a moot point though.

Featuring: Ch. Gruaud Larose, Ch. Branaire-Ducru, Ch. Montrose, Ch. Haut Brion.

We had heard good reports about the wines from the Right Bank, especially Pomerol, so were keen to see if this day of tasting would improve our opinion of the vintage. We certainly hoped so as the first 3 days had not left us feeling super optimistic about 2006.

Featuring: Ch. Lafleur-Gazin, Ch. La Fleur PÈtrus, Ch. PÈtrus, Ch. Trotanoy, Ch. Providence Moueix, Ch. Lafleur, Ch. Feytit Clinet, Ch. Figeac, Ch. Cheval Blanc and Ch. d'Yquem.

There are few, if any, more beautiful wines in Bordeaux than Ch. Lafite. The ethereal finesse, the lacy tannins, the intense, pure fruit and feminine delicacy; they are all there in this lovely wine. It is beautifully silky with coffee, spice and cedar notes, and a long seductive finish. Elegant, ... MORE
