"Rochegude, surrounded by vines in the southern Rhône, is where I spent part of my honeymoon, and the heat here at the height of summer helps explain why its reds are as chunky as they are. Winemaker Serge Remusan alleviates this by sourcing grapes for this from higher altitude vineyards and has created a lovely, herby, earthy, briary red."

...these Cinsault vines are more than 40 years old, so the resulting fruit has bags ofcharacter, and the wine is not filtered or fined so has not lost any of itspersonality getting from vat to bottle. Obviously, at this price, this is an unoaked wine, but a four-week maceration has resulted in no shortage of varietal character. I loved its perfume, its fruity, soft, charming start, andenjoyed the juicy crunch on the finish. This is a simple wine, but delightfully so, designed for drinking over the next six to eight months.

"Fresh and crystalline. More forward than many 2007s but so much the better. This would be a very nice house aperitif. Whistle clean and just off dry" (Jancis Robinson MW, jancisrobinson.com - Nov 08)

Johannes Selbach has responded to our request for an upgraded Kabinett style of Riesling with typical aplomb and generosity. A Mosel archetype, this wine celebrates an harmonious alliance between pure lime and peach fruit, gentle minerality and modest alcohol, all gracefully textured. Its elegant fabric is underpinned by classic freshness and wonderful natural sweetness.

You don’t have to spend a fortune at Berry’s, as this delicious unoaked Spanish red, made from 40-year-old tempranillo vines, proves, all smouldering, 14.7 per cent, spicy, beefy, plum and prune-like flavours.

Cuvaison longue, shouts this label, and indeed this Languedoc red spends an impressive five weeks macerating on its predominantly merlot grape skins. Bristling with the fat, ripe, spicy, smoky, herby, almost exotic fruit that's just what's needed with everything from a picnic lunch to a more substantial plate of rare roast beef salad.

"Fine, spicy, ultra-ripe currant jam. Big, yet seductive."
(Wines of the Year - Highly Recommended 4/5 Stars- Decanter Nov 08)

This big wine with juicy black fruit is laced with leathery spice, thanks to an open-top fermentation and old oak élévage. This is made in a classic Australian style and, not surprisingly, is a great barbecue wine.

Medium-Full Bodied, Dry, Rose, Southern Rhône Blend, Drink now, Biodynamic, 14% alc.

A powerful, dry, inky, jewel-like pinky-red rosé made from grenache and cinsaut grapes in an area renowned for its pinks: Tavel in the southern Rhône valley. It's a gorgeous, fat, ripe, peppery, plummy, 14 per cent alcohol pink, but I appreciate some may find its bone-dry, full-on flavour and alcohol too much. Best served with food

Medium Bodied, Sweet, White, Sauv.Blanc & Sémillon, Drink now, Cork Closure, 12% alc.

2004 was a difficult vintage, but after four journeys through the vines to pick nobly rotten grapes, Château Suduiraut, responsible for this Berry's bottling, was done. It's one of the smallest sauternes crops ever, but given that halves of 2004 Suduiraut cost £30-plus, this lesser label with some of the grand vin's intense, waxy, peach and marzipan fruit is a delight.

Outside its heartland of Condrieu, I haven't come across a viognier as rich in dried apricot fruitiness and with such finely balanced acidity as this example from near Montpellier.
