Telegraph Wine Offer

The Bunch is a loose coalition of six of the country's most venerable independent wine merchants: Adnams (founded 1872), Berry Bros & Rudd (1698), Corney & Barrow (1780), Lay & Wheeler (1854), Tanners (1842) and Yapp Bros (1969). All six not only boast more than a thousand years of experience between them, but they also have more than 10,000 different wines in their cellars and on their shelves.

“I have persuaded the six companies of The Bunch to make an "In the Know" range of wines available to readers of The Daily Telegraph – and to keep the price under £100. Well, they’ve done it, coming up with a fascinating selection that you won’t find in the supermarkets. With classy but modestly-priced alternatives to the likes of Barolo and Bordeaux, Champagne and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Condrieu and Chianti, there is much here to enjoy and all at a cracking price"
(Jonathan Ray - Daily Telegraph - 08-Nov-2008)

Berry Bros. & Rudd

2007 Domaine de Coudoulet Viognier, Vin de Pays d’Oc, Southern France
The slopes of the Montagne Noire provide the natural amphitheatre of the Minervois, a fairly pleasing 45-minute drive east from Carcassonne. Producer Pierre Andre Ournac’s aspiration is to avoid the overly alcoholic wines that this grape sometimes achieves in these parts. As a result this wine dances with delicate apricot notes and a peach-stone texture, but has the elegance that is so often missing this far south. Fabulous with fish.

2007 Domaine de Coudoulet Syrah, Vin de Pays d’Oc, Southern France
This wonderful richly textured wine is from the up-and-coming Livinière enclave of Minervois. This Syrah is for relatively early drinking and is a very well balanced wine with blackberry fruit, ripe tannins and a delightful freshness. The hints of garrigue and liquorice on the nose help to identify its origin; perfect with a warming casserole.

Adnams

Adnams White Burgundy, Cuvée Paul Talmard, Domaine Talmard, Macon, Burgundy, France
This unoaked white Burgundy, from the gleaming steel tank-lined cellars of the Talmard family (they're based in the town of Chardonnay in the Mâcon region, so ought to know a thing or two about the grape) truly is 'les genoux de l' abeille'. Stunningly clean, fresh and characterful, with white peach, lemon and melon flavours, it's sophisticated and versatile and perfect as an apéritif or with chicken, fish or salads.

2006 Morelino di Scansano, Serpaia, Marema, Tuscany, Italy
Subjects of the Austro-Hungarian empire, the Endrici (Endrizzi in local dialect) family arrived in northern Italy in 1885 and established a formidable estate at the foot of the Dolomites. More recently, the Endrizzis descended from lofty Trentino to purchase the Tuscan estate Serpaia. The application of biodynamic techniques has resulted in impressive wines like this.

Tanners

2007 Quincy, Domaine de Trotereau, Loire, France
A lovely wine with a great gooseberry fool character. Crisp and refreshing with good length, it is a strong rival to its neighbours in Sancerre. Pierre Ragon makes this excellent wine in a very traditional manner.

2003 Gran Marius, Bodegas Piqueras, Almansa, Spain
Deep ruby red with succulent plum and prune aromas. Sweet strawberry, damson and stewed plum flavours on the palate are complemented by creamy vanilla and toasty, spicy oak. Rich and dark. This wine would be great with lamb, steak and cheese dishes.

Lay & Wheeler

2006 Langhe Nebbiolo, DOC, Cantina del Pino, Italy
The 2006 Nebbiolo has the classic nose of raspberry fruit and spice with rose petal notes. The palate is medium bodied, with sweet fruit, tar, minerals and spice to the fore backed up by well integrated tannins. Lovely depth and balance. This would be excellent with heavy meat dishes or casseroles or with aged cheese. Cantina del Pino make exceptional Nebbiolo and this is Barbaresco in all but name.

2006 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, Michel Gros, Burgundy, France
Violet-like, floral nuances as well as a very appealing mix of red and blue fruit aromas. This wine is full and ripe but held in check with a touch of minerality that focuses the wine. An elegant wine with a silky finish that showcases the wine making skills of Michel Gros.

Yapp Brothers

2006 Costieres de Nimes, Cuvée Tradition, Château Rouband, Languedoc-Roussillon, France
This wine offers wonderful earth and spice characteristics and redcurrant flavours are supported by warming tannins. Perfect served with red meats and hard cheeses now or over the next couple of years.

Crémant de Limoux Brut Cuvée Selection NV, Domaine Collin, Languedoc-Roussillon, France
This full-bodied, dry sparkling wine offers subtle red fruit aromas and flavours and a fresh, clean finish. Best served chilled as an aperitif.

Corney & Barrow

2005 Domaine de Saissac, Vin de Pays d’Oc, Southern France
This Cabernet Sauvignon from Languedoc-Roussillon is deep red black in colour, with notes of cassis and cedar, ripe and sweetly fruited. Partially aged in oak, this wine has a wonderful fruit concentration and a fine balance.

2003 Château Septy, Coteaux de Pomport, Monbazillac, Southern France
This elegant and luscious wine is a good alternative to Sauternes. This wine has beautiful straw colour with tints of gold, the nose reveals notes of exotic fruits, honey and a hint of botrytis. On the palate, it is a fine balance and has a rich concentration of sweet, ripe fruit with a nervy citrus acidity.
