The Wine Club- Reserve Mixed Case
Reserve Mixed Case - July 2009
2 bottles of each of the following wines:
2007 St Romain Blanc, Sous le Chateau Domaine Potel, Burgundy, France
(White)
Chardonnay, 13% alc.
This wine has a very pretty nose, quite full yet with the lovely fresh
steeliness of St Romain. It comes from the prime Sous Le Château
vineyard, which may soon be promoted to Premier Cru, and will offer lovely
drinking reasonably soon.
2006 Langhe Nebbiolo DOC, Az. Agr. Giuseppe Mascarello, Piedmont
(Red)
Nebbiolo, 13.5% alc.
From an outstanding vintage, an intensely focused nose full of compact
strawberry and sandalwood notes; the palate similarly so, this 'baby Barolo'
combines an impressive concentration of strawberry, almost menthol flavours,
poise as well as a withering charm. Especially fine with turkey and
stuffing.
(David Berry Green, BBR Buyer)
2007 Grignolino d'Asti, Braida, Piedmont, Italy (Red)
Grignolino, 13% alc.
An ancient Piedmontese red grape variety, Grignolino thrives only on the sandy
calcareous soils that are responsible for the region's sparkling wines: those
of Asti and Alessandria. And as with the region's other star, Nebbiolo, the
lighter the colour the more refined the wine. This wine is pale, almost pink in
colour, the nose pings with a herbal strawberry perfume, with just a hint of
raspberry essence.
2006 Nuits-St Georges, Vieilles Vignes, Patrice Rion, Burgundy (Red)
Pinot Noir, 13% alc.
A veritable bundle of energy, this deliciously plummy, rich wine is made in a
classically Nuits style. Full of fruit with life, lift and a fair amount of
class.
2007 Menetou-Salon, Collection A. Gaston, Louis de Valière, Joseph
Mellot, Loire (White)
Sauvignon Blanc, 12.5% alc.
As you might expect from this sunny region just to the west of Sancerre, the
nose is delightfully lemon fresh with gentle, creamy aromatics. The overriding
sensation on the palate is one of citron presse, of pure freshly squeezed lemon
with fruity acidity and understated elegance. Delicious anytime, notably with
sea fish.
(David Berry Green, BBR Buyer)
2005 Frog's Leap Chardonnay, Napa Valley California, Frog's Leap,
California (White)
Chardonnay, 13.5% alc.
Fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks and older French Oak barrels, the
Frog's Leap Chardonnay avoids the heavy vanilla and buttery flavors typical of
high-malolactic, high-alcohol wines. Instead, aromas of apple and pear give way
to the lighter, more delicate aromas of orange blossoms.
