1995 Champagne

This vintage came as a welcome relief to the Champenois after the previous four vintages, which had been difficult, to say the least. Growing conditions were good throughout the summer, although there was some rain in September causing some rot to develop. The grapes were harvested in the second half of September and during October in predominantly dry weather. This was the first universally declared vintage since 1990 and many excellent Champagnes have been produced. At this stage the Champagnes are similar in character to the 1988s, with the best examples possessing marvellous ageing potential.

Bollinger were the first successfully to market the Late Disgorged concept; indeed they imposed a trademark on the RD (Récemment Degorgée) nomenclature, leaving imitators linguistically taxed in their wake. Rather more controversial is their philosophy of multiple releases of the ... MORE

"After the "stuctured" 1988, "sunny" 1989 and the "explosive" 1990, Remi Krug presented his "classic" 1995 in London saying it was reminiscent of the 1969 and 1979 vintages: wines celebrated for their harmony and balance. Robust and marvellously fresh, ... MORE

"The fruits of an exceptionally warm summer, the 1995 Oenotheque was released in early 2008. Its colour is an elegant pale gold; then notes of broiche and honey, entwined with almonds, apricots and hints of smoke. The palate is intense but beautifully rounded, the tension of its make-up relieved ... MORE

Like biting into clover honey spread on whole-grain toast, with a subtle hint of berries... Fine, lingering finish. Drink now through 2010.

Of the two successive vintages of DP Rosé, namely the 95 and the 96, the 95 is the child with a more classical education. Next to 1996’s unprecedented levels of both sugar and acidity, 1995 is a more traditional vintage, its watchword being ripeness and definition of shape. This ... MORE

The 1995 Vintage provides a fascinating contrast to the 1996. This is a tightly wound, sinewy Champagne loaded with brioche, toasted oak, lemon rind, flowers and minerals. The mousse is extremely fine and the style decidedly more linear and fresh than the 1996. Though deceptively medium-bodied in ... MORE
