1990 Red Bordeaux

The third in a trio of superlative Bordeaux vintages, and now widely regarded as one of the finest post-war vintages. July and August were the driest since 1961, with July being the hottest ever since records began, and August being the hottest since 1928. Heavy rain at the end of August was just what was required and September was relatively cool but dry, resulting in perfect harvesting conditions.

What marks the 1990s out are their ripeness, balance, harmony and grip. Sensational wines have been produced across the board, with wines from St-Estèphe, Pauillac, Pomerol and St-Emilion being particularly successful. The lesser wines are beginning to drink now and are extremely impressive; when the top wines mature in another 3-5 years they will be sublime. Arguably the best vintage since 1961.

Far less evolved than the 89 and still very youthful. Very deep in colour and elegant and aristicratic on the nose. Concentated, intense and harmonious on the palate with pronounced tannins and good acidity levels. This is one for the long haul and needs at leats another 5 years of bottle ageing.

"1990 is amongst the top six vintages of the last century. 1990 Las Cases demonstrates a gloriously expansive, powerful aroma, still showing classic youthful notes of cassis and black fruits, with a succulence and richness on the palate that places it almost on the level of the First Growths. ... As one might expect, this is a brilliant wine, but it remains shockingly young, even for the fast evolving 1990s. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by a classic, nearly restrained set of aromatics that includes notions of sweet black cherries, black currants, lead pencil, and wet stones. ... MORE

Full, ripe, concentrated colour. Ripe, cedary, almost chocolaty on the nose with very ripe fruit aromas. Sweet and a little jammy on the palate with concentrated fruit flavours. A very good wine which while drinking well now still has plenty of scope for developing even more depth.

Much like its nearby rival, Haut Brion, the 1990 La Mission has always been relatively evolved, complex, and supple-textured. Even at age 3-4 it performed beautifully. The tannins are sweet, the acidity low, and the high levels of glycerin and concentrated fruit have always been present, and they ... MORE

In terms of the brilliant complexity and nobility of the aromatics, scorched earth, black currants, plums, charcoal, cedar, and spices, the 1990 offers an aromatic explosion that is unparalleled....The 1990 put on weight after bottling, and is currently rich, full-bodied, opulent, even flamboyant ... Ch. Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan has a very expressive bouquet, typical Graves earthy, warm tobacco leaf and cigar box. On the palate a real kernel of sweetness on the mid-palate, lovely texture in the mouth, very well balanced, fresh, with a long, exemplary finish. Ready to drink now with ... MORE

The 1990 Petrus remains incredibly young, one of the least evolved wines of the vintage.. This dense ruby/purple-colored effort is beginning to hint at the massive richness and full-bodied intensity lurking beneath its wall of tannin. The vintage’s sweetness, low acidity, and velvety tannins ... MORE
