2005 Red Bordeaux

2005 is a truly fantastic vintage with great quality across the board on both the Left and Right Banks.

The weather during the 2005 growing season was exceptionally dry, leading almost to drought conditions in certain areas. Temperatures were also frequently above average but not to the heatwave extremes of 2003.

The key outcome is grapes of exceptional maturity but of smaller size than usual. The ratio of solids to juice is higher than usual, yielding wines of exceptional concentration. However, this is entirely natural concentration, not created by undue manipulation of the fruit in the vats.

Moreover, the wines possess exceptional balance; warm days during August and September imbued the grapes with marvellous ripeness but cool nights ensured that the acidities did not drop.  As a result the wines combine natural richness with a cool, refreshing acidity.

Mention must also be made of the tannins; an effect of the small size of the berries, particularly of the Cabernet Sauvignon, is a very high tannin count in the wine, one of the highest ever recorded in many cases.

These tannins are, however, fully ripe so possess a silky texture on the palate with no hint of aggression or austerity.  The combination of excellent maturity, correct acidity and ripe tannins has produced wines of quite exceptional quality.

How does the vintage compare with the great years of recent memory? Well, outstanding vintages always seem to have a layer of `puppy fat' which gives them a delightful fleshy texture, even at the outset.

1982 springs to mind as a valid comparison in every sense, but it's worth noting that yields in 1982 were considerably higher than in 2005, resulting in slightly lower concentration.  There are some similarities with 1990, but the 2005 wines have greater freshness for the most part as a result of their higher acidities.

Argueably an overperformer at its price, the 2005 Tour de Biot has the year-in, year-out consistency of this impressive producer, but this is further augmented by the strenth of this remarkable vintage. Spicy dark fruits with a hint of richness from the well-integrated oak, this is a must-have everyday drinking Claret. MORE

This estate is a terrific new discovery for us. A blend of 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon from 20-year-old vines, this biodynamic beauty is rich, elegant and voluptuous.Brimming with ripe redcurrants and black cherries with a hint of tar, this has a sophisticated, silky texture and a very fine length. "A fleshy, ripe but not over-done style of Bordeaux, this is a claret that is designed to provide immediate pleasure thanks to its fruity, supple character. From the satellite appellation of Cotes du Bourg it also represents an often better value for money than many of its neighbours. Enjoy this wine now or soon."

Bravo to BBR for its classy collection of 2005 second wines from some well-known and not so well-known châteaux, such as this plump, complex, chocolate and herb-charged claret.
(Jane MacQuitty-The Times - 24-May-08)

"Showing just a hint of traditional Médoc earthiness, this harmonious wine is rich and chocolatey on the nose and herb-charged, plump and fruity on the palate. It’s a Claret with plenty of class and deserves decanting for at least an hour before being enjoyed with a roast of lamb and all the trimmings"

"There was a time when I stuck to my guns and said that if you wanted a traditional, easily quaffable and affordable wine your only option would be Berrys' Extra Ordinary Claret. Having had the pleasure of tasting what the 2005 petit chateau's had to offer I'm now changing my mind. This wine is PHENOMENAL! Lots of ripe fruit and very approachable. Medium bodied yet a little bit chunky with soft tannins, spicy overtones, a good bit of oak and glorious black fruits. This truly gives you a bang for your buck."

"This wine has a beautifully deep colour and quite a sweet cherry fruit nose. Classically styled with forest fruits and a fresh acidity. Bright, fresh and much, much more than just a simple quaffing wine."

We are delighted to offer this beautiful wine again En Primeur. We are not sure we agree with Mr Parker on his comparison to the most expensive wine in Bordeaux however it is delicious! The 2000 and 2001 are both drinking beautifully at the moment and we are sure the 2005 is even better.

Made predominantly from Merlot, the pure ripe tannins in this wine provide a lovely backbone to the ripe blackcurrant and cherry fruit. This region could be one of the next big things in Bordeaux so pick up a case or two to stay ahead of the game. Early drinking too, 2008-2015. MORE

A great example of an appellation punching above its weight, from a truly great vintage.2005 yielded grapes of perfect ripeness so there was wonderful consistency amongst the wines of the region across all price points. This wine exhibits juicy, lush, plummy characteristics, backed by fine-grained tannins, and has surprising complexity on the finish. Try it with grilled lamb or light game dishes.

With the expert guidance of famed consultant Michell Rolland, Chateau Haut-Bernat has improved its wine enormously in recent years. The 2005 is ruby coloured and shows an expressive nose of woody and spicy aromas, and flavours of fresh, attractive red fruits. The palate is soft but well structured with crisp, ripe tannins which melt away to leave a very pleasing, refreshing finish.

Villa Bel Air is made in small quantities by the same owners as Ch.Lynch Bages and in a very similar style. This is cool, vibrant and exciting with glorious Graves characteristics of fine tannins, attractive and expressive minerality. This little gem will provide instant gratification upon shipment in 2008 but will get even better over the following years. Superb value and delicious!
