A disappointing year for red Burgundy with the baking-hot summer weather proving to be almost too much of a good thing.
Summer was hot and then September brought almost heat-wave weather conditions. The result was a huge crop of grapes, which favoured whites much more than reds and which proved a serious problem to growers in terms of available vat space for fermantation and lack of fruit concentration.
The weather was so warm that it was difficult to cool the fermentation temperatures - those with the proper equipment were able to cool down their musts and produced very good wines - those without, struggled.
The red wines were soft and easy and will not have survived. I finished up whatever was in my cellar well before the millennium.
