The 2002 wine vintage was rather disappointing for the Southern Rhône, whilst Northern Rhône managed to produce some good wines of power , albeit of a leaner quality.
From the outset the conditions were not favourable - poor flowering, hail, rot - and the yields were decimated in places. The weather in July and August did not offer any hope either. The southern Rhone was badly affected by torrential rains and floods in the first week of September.
Ripening had been acceptable until then, so some fair white wines were produced. Vineyrads at higher locations suffered a little less, but crop levels were down by a half nearly everywhere.
