Steak and Kidney Pie Wine Match

Peter Baird asked what wine to have with Steak and kidney pie served with braised leeks, carrots and New potatoes.

Nick Page's suggestions:
This is a lovely comfort food recipe. The slow cooked softness of the food would push me to a soft medium tannin red made from Merlot. Right bank Bordeaux, from a ripe vintage, or if budget allowed a Californian Merlot from Napa Valley but neither would be cheap. At the more affordable end look at the Northern Rhône. Some of our producers (for example Gerin, Rostaing) make some wonderful 100% Syrah wines just outside the A.C. area, and they are a steal. They have vibrant black fruit character and enough acidity to cut through the pie crust.
