Clos des Papes 2023

Clos des Papes 2023

— Paul Avril et Fils —

Clos des Papes ranks among the most esteemed estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the broader wine world. Under Vincent Avril’s guidance, this family-run estate has been working organically for nearly two decades. It produces low yields from 50+-year-old vines, which thrive despite challenges such as 140 km/h Mistral winds and extreme weather.

We are delighted to present the opportunity to acquire the latest releases. Vincent has kept pricing steady for the reds, with the Rouge increasing by £1 since the 2020 vintage, marking three consecutive years of stable pricing.

Please note that these wines are available for UK sales only. Purchases from overseas will be cancelled.

Paul Avril et Fils

Based in the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Paul Avril et Fils is one of the most revered estates in the region. It is known for its exceptional wines, especially its flagship, Clos des Papes. Founded in the 19th century by Paul Avril, the estate has remained a family-run operation for generations. Today, it is led by Vincent Avril, who continues producing wines embodying the unique terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

With vineyards over 50 years old and working organically for nearly two decades, Clos des Papes thrives in a challenging climate marked by extreme weather and the Mistral winds. The estate’s commitment to quality over quantity is reflected in its low yields and minimalist approach in the cellar, ensuring wines that capture the purest expression of the land.

The estate’s philosophy is simple: produce just one red and one white wine each year to showcase the best the vintage offers. As Vincent Avril commented about the 2023 vintage, “It is beautiful in quality and correct volume. However, we are still at Clos des Papes, with volumes low enough to prioritise quality, and thus, we continue to produce only one red and white wine.” This dedication to excellence and purity is evident in the wines crafted with meticulous attention to detail, from the low-yielding vines to the careful ageing in large old oak foudres.

The 2023 Clos des Papes Rouge, tasted from barrel in November 2024, exemplifies the estate’s commitment to quality. It boasts a beautiful, fine nose with deep blackcurrant and cherry fruit, balanced by a hint of dark liquorice and spice. The wine is incredibly silky on the palate, with dominant flavours of blackcurrant and blueberry, underpinned by a fresh minerality and subtle chalky tannins that provide a long, precise finish.

A legacy of excellence

Catriona Felstead MW, Senior Buyer, praises the 2023 vintage for its “exquisite freshness” and “ultra-pure finish,” comparing it to some of the estate’s finest vintages.

Clos des Papes is synonymous with longevity, quality, and tradition, with an unwavering focus on producing wines of exceptional character. In 2026, the estate will celebrate a century of collaboration with its top cork supplier, a testament to its commitment to the finest details and its dedication to preserving the exceptional quality of its wines. As Jeb Dunnuck observed, the 2023 vintage ranks alongside the legendary 2005 and 2007 vintages, offering a balanced, fresh wine with silky tannins and good length, solidifying Clos des Papes’ position among the top estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the global wine community.

"It's concentrated, medium to full-bodied, has a pure, layered, seamless profile, ripe tannins, and a great finish." Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com
