There is a belief amongst some whisky drinkers that the older the whisky, the better it is. Malted barley or grain that has been in barrel as long as I've been tying my own shoelaces can be staggeringly good that's for sure, but the resurgence and growing appreciation for vibrant and characterful young whisky is just as exciting.
Nc'Nean, with their very first batch hitting shelves this summer, is as young (and utterly delicious) as they come. The socially conscious Highland distillery is fuelled by biomass and released Scotland's first whisky bottled in 100% recycled glass - I look forward to seeing what the future holds for this forward-thinking producer. However, for now, I wait contentedly with dram in hand, assured that it has everything needed to challenge perceptions of even the most traditionally minded enthusiast.
The nose is bright and packed with exotic orchard fruit. Apricot jam on chewy sourdough, buttery Scottish shortbread and citrus peel. There is more weight on the palate than the nose would suggest, with a malty richness at first settling into a long and oily finish.
