About this SPIRIT
Hampden Estate Distillery
Founded in 1753, Hampden Estate has been distilling rum for centuries in Trelawny Parish, historically known as the pinnacle of Jamaican rum production. Hampden is one of the only distilleries in Jamaica operating solely traditional pot stills, giving complex and fruity rums. Fermentation is long, slow and natural, whilst the heat and humidity of maturation ensure a swift interaction between spirit and barrel, creating a deep and rich character

Description
Hampden Estate is famed for making “high ester rum”; highly aromatic and full of unusual tropical flavour and ‘funk’, this style is rich and unctuous with a full body. In accordance with Jamaican rum regulations, this one has spent a minimum of eight years in oak which, according to the distillery, is “equivalent to almost 25 years of maturation in the European climate”. It has no added sugar or flavouring and as such is a true example of high ester pot still Jamaican rum. Expect notes of overripe banana, mango, vanilla and red apple with some nutmeg and cinnamon, too.
'The best rums to buy now – and how to drink them' - Neil Ridley & Joel Harrison, The Telegraph
Amongst rum lovers, the remarkable Hampden distillery has a reputation for extreme ‘funky’ flavours and aromas. Although elements of those characteristics are here – notably blackened bananas and overripe pineapples – this 8-year-old is a comparatively restrained example of Hampden. Rich, chewy molasses and succulent spices give this balance, alongside the exotic fruit and floral notes characteristic of Jamaican rum. Surprisingly magnificent alongside a lamb tagine or, indeed, an Eccles cake.
