Description

‘Macduff is a bit of "work horse" distillery, producing millions of litres a year, mainly destined for Dewar’s blend, however like so many of these un-championed plants Macduff makes great whisky! Personally, I love this very distillate forward style that only comes from good quality spirit, matured in delicate casks for at least a decade.’

Jonny McMillan, Assistant Reserve Spirits Manager, Berry BRos. & Rudd

This subtle Highlander initially offers charming aromas of malted barley and austere green fruits, as is often the way however a little time in the glass allows this whisky to open up and notes of manuka honey, lemon oil and cedar appear. The distillate’s fruity character dominates the palate bringing orange, underripe peach, green wine gums and honeyed toast. The finish shows waves of wood spice and a touch of vanilla.

Macduff Distillery, Speyside

Macduff Distillery, Speyside

The Macduff whisky distillery, also often known as the Glen Deveron distillery (the name kept changing back and forth), was founded in 1962, which makes it one of the newest distilleries in Scotland. A Speyside distillery, whiskies produced at Macduff tend to be clean and fruity, with a fresher feel than older and more mellowed single malts.

Macduff was acquired by William Lawson Distillers Ltd. in 1972, which then was made a part of Martini and Rossi in 1980, which subsequently was absorbed into the Barcadi Corporation in 1992, who are now the current owners. Barcardi place their subsidiary company John Dewar & Sons in charge of the distillery; however one might argue that Bacardi’s influence is still strongly felt, due to the distillery’s emphasis on volume whiskies needed for blends, and the short aging time needed for the few single malts produced.

The Macduff distillery produces independent bottlings under its own name, as well as the Glen Deveron single malt whisky.

Speyside Whisky

Speyside Whisky

To some Speyside represents the jewel in whisky’s crown. Speyside is the home of legal whisky production and it’s best known examples. Around the world Glenlivet, Macallan, Glenfiddich, Glenrothes and Glenfarclas typify all that whisky, at it’s best has to offer. At it’s heart running from the Monadhliath mountains north to the sea, is the River Spey. It is the fastest flowing river in Britain, and also well known for its salmon fishing.

Speyside is the principal whisky-producing region: Speyside has within it some forty-six operating distilleries - over half the total number in the entire Scotland.

Speysides are essentially sweet whiskies. They have little peaty character They are typically highly perfumed, feminine and elegant.

The classical nature of Speyside’s malts means that a number of the finest malts are used almost exclusively for blending. It is the top Speysider’s that give good blends their ‘Top Dressing’.

Malts such as Mortlach, Glen Elgin, Strathmill and Benrinnes are rarely found as distillery bottlings, however when individual casks are tracked down by independent bottlers such as our Own Selection Single Malt Whiskies the resultant whisky can be quite wonderful.
