Description

Tones of lime, lemon skin, Orange blossom & dried apricots predominate on the nose. The wine is rich and round on the palate displaying great vigour and definition. The palate is medium bodied with an attractive waxy mouth feel balanced by lively acidity. Perfect with shell fish. Now and over the next 3 - 4 years.
Stuart Rae - Private Account Manager

South Africa's trademark white grape, Chenin blanc is here given some subtle oak treatment, but this in no way detracts from the vibrant citrus and apricot fruit.

Jean Daneel Wines

Jean Daneel Wines

Jean Daneel was established in Napier in 2004. Son Jean-Pierre joined the business in 2005 as winemaker. Today, working out of a tiny establishment in Napier in the Overberg region, he has established himself as one of the top winemakers in the country and has achieved international acclaim for his outstanding wines. Jean Pierre’s signature white wine is the Chenin Blanc.

The wine is aged in barrel for 12 months with 20% new French oak. As with the Rudera, the Jean Daneel wine is a balanced and beautiful example of South Africa’s take on the Chenin Blanc grape.

Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc is an important white grape variety planted in the Anjou-Saumur and Touraine regions of the Loire Valley and the most widely planted varietal grape in South Africa.

In the Loire it produces high quality dry wines in Savenniéres, and luscious sweet, dessert wines in Coteaux du Layon, Bonnezeaux and Quarts de Chaume. In Vouvray and Montlouis it can be dry, medium dry, or sweet, and still or sparkling. Whether dry or sweet, the best Loire Chenin Blancs possess marvellously concentrated rich, honeyed fruit together with refreshingly vibrant acidity. It is Chenin Blanc's high acidity that enable the wines to age so well.

In South Africa Chenin Blanc is easier to grow and is prized for its versatility. It is used as a cheap blending option with Chardonnay, Colombard, and Muscat but also bottled unblended. The best producers keep their yields low and produce impressive mouthfilling wines.
