2013 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia, Bolgheri, Tuscany

Description

Originally selling as the second wine from Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove has now developed a following in its own right. Made for the first time in 1997, Le Serre Nuove has evolved over the years from a wine dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and new oak and looking very much like the little brother to Ornellaia to the wine with its own personality that it is today. All of the major Bordeaux-blend varieties planted on the estate make a contribution to today’s Serre Nuove, with Merlot usually dominating, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon and Bolgheri’s most fashionable variety Cabernet Franc plus a little Petit Verdot for backbone.

Tenuta dell’Ornellaia is located in one of the world’s most exciting wine regions: Bolgheri. A breathtaking avenue lined by towering cypress trees leads inland from the Aurelia, the old Roman coastal road, up to the walls of Bolgheri’s medieval hamlet. From the village the view extends far out to sea and on a clear day the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago and Corsica can be seen. The mild maritime climate and  the lush Mediterranean vegetation leave an imprint upon the character of the wines. Tenuta dell’Ornellaia's unique territory guides all aspects of production: limited quantities to ensure maximum quality, attention to every detail, selective hand harvesting, microvinification and ageing.

Le Serre Nuove now receives great plaudits from the critics, Antonio Gallioni of Vinous believes that “current vintages of Le Serre Nuove are actually better wines than the early vintages of Ornellaia”, going on to say “In top vintages it is the hidden gem in this (Tenuta dell’Ornellaia’s) lineup from a price to quality perspective”. Meanwhile, James Suckling says that the 2013 is “a superb second wine from Ornellaia”.

It is immediately apparent that this comes from a top notch vintage, the beautiful aromatics could not come from anything

Bolgheri

Bolgheri

Bolgheri is a new DOC in the coastal Maremma region which first rose to prominence during the 1970s with the emergence of the so-called Super Tuscan wines like Ornellaia and Sassicaia. These new ventures had rocked the DOC establishment by using high proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon, opting out of the DOC system and relabeling their wines as simply Vino da Tavola (table wine).

Having won universal acclaim and exchanging hands for unprecedented prices (higher even than Tuscany's finest examples), the authorities relented and awarded Bolgheri its own DOC. The actions of the Super Tuscans inspired a generation in Italy, even if some of the wines here have lost a little of their lustre since.

Cabernet Sauvignon lends itself particularly well in blends with Merlot. This is actually the archetypal Bordeaux blend, though in different proportions in the sub-regions and sometimes topped up with Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.

In the Médoc and Graves the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend can range from 95% (Mouton-Rothschild) to as low as 40%. It is particularly suited to the dry, warm, free- draining, gravel-rich soils and is responsible for the redolent cassis characteristics as well as the depth of colour, tannic structure and pronounced acidity of Médoc wines. However 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wines can be slightly hollow-tasting in the middle palate and Merlot with its generous, fleshy fruit flavours acts as a perfect foil by filling in this cavity.

In St-Emilion and Pomerol, the blends are Merlot dominated as Cabernet Sauvignon can struggle to ripen there - when it is included, it adds structure and body to the wine. Sassicaia is the most famous Bordeaux blend in Italy and has spawned many imitations, whereby the blend is now firmly established in the New World and particularly in California and  Australia.

I have always been a big fan of this wine. The 2013 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove is a generous blend of Merlot (32%), Cabernet Sauvignon (36%), Cabernet Franc (20%) and Petit Verdot (12%). The wine presents an intensely drinkable style with soft fruit nuances of cherry, spice, grilled herb and leather. The integration of those aromas is absolutely seamless. In the mouth, Le Serra Nuove is soft, lush and beautifully persistent.

Wonderful depth of fruit to this wine with blackcurrants, spices, mint and flowers. Full body, firm and silk tannins and a fresh finish. Tight and polished red. This needs another three of four years to come together but shows style and beauty. Superb second wine from Ornellaia.

A marvellous summer and a cool, sunny September made it possible to achieve perfect maturation of the grapes despite the difficult flowering period, with wines that express a particularly elegant side. Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2013 has an intense, bright colour. The nose is vibrant and fruity underscored by delicate toasty notes. On the palate, the smooth, silky texture contrasts with tannins of great freshness. Whilst its structure will enable it to mellow with age, the crispness of the fruit and its soft, fine character make it perfect to enjoy straight away.
