2013 Charmes-Chambertin, Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair Successeurs, Burgundy

Description

De-stemmed by hand, this is mid purple in colour with an ethereal perfume, heady and dancing. It has lovely, smooth fruit through the palate, a touch of strawberry but with some darker notes. It is slightly drier behind, with some chocolate notes.
Jasper Morris, MW - Wine Buyer

The vintage began here on 6th October, once again being short on quantity but with good qualitative potential. Thibault feels that the 2013s can take a long barrel ageing, perhaps up to 24 months. He is using fewer lees, but finer, in order to avoid too many reductive problems.

Critics reviews

Neal Martin 91-93/100
The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru did not quite sing on the nose - a little under-ripeness here perhaps, something that I did not detect from barrel last year. The palate is medium-bodied and again quite stemmy, the oak not quite wedded to the fruit and leaving the finish a little dry and austere. It may simply be an instance of a wine that needs considerable age to subsume the impact of the stems. Certainly I would not touch this for 4-6 years given this showing, and I will defer any score until later.

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.

Charmes-Chambertin

Charmes-Chambertin

Charmes-Chambertin is one of the most famous Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte de Nuits region of Burgundy, and is also the name of the associated AOC of the wines produced from it. Pinot Noir is by far and away the primary grape grown in Charmes, although as with other Burgundy AOC regulations the wines are permitted up to 15 percent Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc or Pinot Gris as auxiliary grapes.
