Description

Run by Oliver Bernard and the team at Domaine de Chevalier, this is silky and beautifully rounded with carefully placed tannins. A real success in this vintage and just brilliant value. Not as well known as it should be.

The 2016 Domaine de la Solitude Blanc, a blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Sémillon, has a generous, focused bouquet of Golden Delicious apple, hints of grapefruit and a touch of yellow flowers. The palate is well balanced with a slightly honeyed entry, the Sémillon playing a key role here. Hints of lemon curd and ginger develop toward the intense finish. Very fine.

The Domaine de la Solitude 2018 Rouge is deep garnet-purple colored and opens with aromas of cedar, earth, blackberries, cassis and tilled soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is generous and muscular with firm, grainy tannins and a long, earthy finish.

This has lovely gentle citrus and freshly sliced peach and grapefruit. A great delivery without being too much, another success.

Notes of citrus, winter savory/green herbs, and subtle minerality define the 2016 Domaine de la Solitude Blanc. It’s medium-bodied, with vibrant acidity and a great finish. It plays in the fresh, crisp, racy end of the spectrum yet has beautiful fruit and purity.

Cab.Sauvignon Blend

Cab.Sauvignon Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon lends itself particularly well in blends with Merlot. This is actually the archetypal Bordeaux blend, though in different proportions in the sub-regions and sometimes topped up with Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.

In the Médoc and Graves the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend can range from 95% (Mouton-Rothschild) to as low as 40%. It is particularly suited to the dry, warm, free- draining, gravel-rich soils and is responsible for the redolent cassis characteristics as well as the depth of colour, tannic structure and pronounced acidity of Médoc wines. However 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wines can be slightly hollow-tasting in the middle palate and Merlot with its generous, fleshy fruit flavours acts as a perfect foil by filling in this cavity.

In St-Emilion and Pomerol, the blends are Merlot dominated as Cabernet Sauvignon can struggle to ripen there - when it is included, it adds structure and body to the wine. Sassicaia is the most famous Bordeaux blend in Italy and has spawned many imitations, whereby the blend is now firmly established in the New World and particularly in California and  Australia.
