2018 Barolo, Bricco Rocche, Ceretto, Piedmont, Italy

Description

The one-and-a-half hectare of vines comprising Bricco Roche creates the smallest defined MGA (cru) in Barolo – a Ceretto monopole. “Bricco” means the highest point; this vineyard sits in the centre of the Castiglione Falletto appellation, surrounded by great vineyards like Villero and Monprivato. This is a higher and cooler site, producing a wine that is layered, deep and subtly spiced. It’s a dense and superb wine – not dominated by tannins, as it would have been in the past.

Critics reviews

Walter Speller 17.5/20

Castiglione Falletto. Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Distinctly minerally and with great purity of fruit under the saline hints. Generous raspberry and strawberry fruit with bags of powdery tannins on the finish. Closes up fast, but already hugely appealing even if it needs more age to come to full bloom. Long and fruit-driven and still light of touch.

The 2018 Barolo Bricco Rocche possesses terrific depth and creaminess, especially within the context of this small-scaled vintage. Silky, aromatic and so expressive, the Bricco Rocche fills out beautifully with a bit of time in the glass. There's terrific presence and class here.

Ripe red berries on the nose, together with some bitter-orange marmalade and spice. If you dig deep down, there’s an emerging note of truffle. Lovely, nascent complexity that’s also reflected on the medium-to full-bodied palate, which is tightly packed with all the goodies that the nose promised. The tannins firm up a bit at the end and need to soften a little to get full enjoyment. But so tempting now! Try from 2024.

About this wine

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Ceretto

This family-run business was founded by Riccardo Ceretto in 1937, principally as a négociant in Alba. He was joined by his sons Bruno and Marcello in the 1960s. Wanting to make and sell their own wines, they began to buy premium land in Barolo and Barbaresco and were among the very first in the region to see the potential of single-vineyard wines. Bruno’s children, Federico and Roberta, and Marcello’s, Alessandro and Lisa, joined in the 1990s. After a period of change and experimentation, a particular style emerged in 2010, utilising shorter skin contact, and a mix of barrique and small botte for a supple but precise expression of Nebbiolo. The family are also involved in various artistic and heritage projects, including the rejuvenation of the famous Piedmontese hazelnuts and two restaurants in Alba: La Piola and the three-star Michelin Piazza Duomo.
