2020 Fleurie, Domaine Lafarge Vial, Beaujolais

Description

This is now a blend of the Bel-Air and Cercillon lieux-dits. It’s raised mostly in a 1,500-litre foudre, alongside some 350-litre barrels. The soil is decomposed pink granite, combining with the relative altitude to give a lifted and perfumed wine. Floral and peppery notes give the wine a vibrant edge. The finish is grippy and saline.

The vineyards are Belair and Cercillon. Clean mid purple. No great bouquet first up. Then it starts to builds, with peonies. A little more tension and structure compared to Chiroubles, nicely nuanced in pretty red fruit, good acid balance and persistence.

This is aromatically similar to the Chiroubles but with just a touch more elegance. The cool and restrained nose mixes both red and dark fruit aromas with those of discreet spice and floral wisps. There is very good detail and energy to the more refined if slightly less concentrated flavors that possess a lovely texture on the lingering finale that firms up as it sits on the palate. Very good quality here.

About this wine

Gamay

A French variety planted predominately in Beaujolais where it is the grape behind everything from light and often acidic Beaujolais Nouveau through to the more serious and well-structured wines from the 10 cru villages. It takes its name from a hamlet just outside Chassagne-Montrachet and was at one stage widely planted on the Côte d`Or. However it was gradually phased out due to its poor yield and supposed poor quality of its wines.
