Description

Sauvignon Blanc dominant on the nose, with a flick of gunsmoke reduction. Great pace and momentum through the palate, this is mouthwatering and seductive, layering brambled gooseberry with citrus and safe alongside slate salinity. So easy to recommend this white wine from director Axel Heinz and oenologist Olga Fusari. 25% new oak, blend at the end of ageing. 12 months in bottle before release.

The grapefruit and white-peach character is vibrant in this young white, with a zesty lemon undertone. It’s medium to full-bodied with crisp acidity and a flavorful finish. I keep thinking about oysters while I taste this! Bright and delicious sauvignon blanc.

White flowers, jasmine, peach, apricot, clementine and citrus nuances with a wet stone minerality. Thrilling and ample at the same time, a well-controlled weight of almost oily peach and bitter nectarine fruit with a citrus pineapple and lemon kick and underlying hints of honeysuckle giving the florality.

Clean with balanced acidity that gives a soft mouthwatering sensation adding to the complexity of the whole. Dynamic with a touch of sweetness and tension - lively and appealing. Director Axel Heinz, winemaker Olga Fusari.

The 2020 Poggio Alle Gazze Dell'Ornellaia is 69% Sauvignon Blanc, 22% Vermentino, 5% Viognier, and the rest Verdicchio, and there are just 350 cases produced. It's a lively, vibrant white that brings solid richness and depth, with medium-bodied aromas and flavours of ripe lemon zest, melon, sappy green herbs, and a subtle, earthy, chalky mineral component that makes this more than a simple, refreshing white.

It is nicely concentrated and has plenty of mid-palate flesh, bright, almost racy, yet integrated acidity, and an excellent finish. It's going to shine on the dinner table and is a delicious white that I suspect will drink at point for another 3-4 years yet also have an exciting evolution beyond that. It's easily my favourite vintage of this cuvée to date.

About this WINE

Ornellaia

Ornellaia

Tenuta dell’Ornellaia is located in one of the world’s most exciting wine regions: Bolgheri. A breathtaking avenue lined by towering cypress trees leads inland from the Aurelia, the old Roman coastal road, up to the walls of Bolgheri’s medieval hamlet. From the village the view extends far out to sea and on a clear day the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago and Corsica can be seen.

The mild maritime climate and  the lush Mediterranean vegetation leave an imprint upon the character of the wines. Tenuta dell’Ornellaia's unique territory guides all aspects of production: limited quantities to ensure maximum quality, attention to every detail, selective hand harvesting, microvinification and ageing.

Ornellaia is a Cabernet/Merlot wine blend. Masseto is made entirely from Merlot - it is a model of rich, silky elegance and has rapidly become a modern classic.

Bolgheri

Bolgheri

Bolgheri is a new DOC in the coastal Maremma region which first rose to prominence during the 1970s with the emergence of the so-called Super Tuscan wines like Ornellaia and Sassicaia. These new ventures had rocked the DOC establishment by using high proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon, opting out of the DOC system and relabeling their wines as simply Vino da Tavola (table wine).

Having won universal acclaim and exchanging hands for unprecedented prices (higher even than Tuscany's finest examples), the authorities relented and awarded Bolgheri its own DOC. The actions of the Super Tuscans inspired a generation in Italy, even if some of the wines here have lost a little of their lustre since.
