2020 Bourgogne Aligoté, Domaine Roulot

The only one to be picked in September 7th), it was matured in stainless and bottled before the harvest. It's a pretty lime green colour, with an electric nose, perfumed and graceful at the same time. Wonderful delicacy right from the start of the range, with intensity, too.

A very Aligoté nose features slightly smoky aromas of exuberantly fresh citrus peel, green apple, and subtle spice hints. The delicious middle-weight flavours possess excellent vibrancy while displaying fine length on the balanced and very dry finale. This is an excellent Bourgogne that is absolutely worth checking out.

Drink from 2024 onward

Vinified and matured in stainless steel tank, the 2020 Bourgogne Aligoté delivers crisp green orchard fruit and fresh bread aromas. Medium-bodied, bright and fine-boned, it will drink well on release.

Jean-Marc Roulot likes his 2020s out of the gates. Comparing them with his 2019s wines, which took time to come together with élevage and in bottle, he observes, "I see myself so much more in the 2020s." The whole domaine was picked between August 20 and 29, three days less than it generally takes Roulot's team, and he reports pHs and alcohols similar to 2017. He's using less new oak in the cellar, adding ceramic vessels and foudres. The result is a compelling range of pure, precise and expressive whites that will delight Roulot's fine-boned, incisive style admirers. I can't wait to revisit them from bottle.
